| Posted: 10 Mar 2011 12:12 AM PST  Colonel Gaddafi's forces today blasted an oil terminal to smithereens as Libya's bloody civil war entered its blackest day. Rebels retaliated by firing back with rockets as a fireball exploded from one of the oil tanks and the sky above the Es Sider terminal, in the east of the country, filled with hideous smoke. A witness said one of the smoke plumes was the biggest he had seen in the conflict so far. The fresh onslaught came as Gaddafi deployed tanks and snipers to 'shoot anything that moves'. Forces loyal to the Libyan dictator poured into the city of Zawiyah in a desperate bid to oust the hardcore band of protesters and army defectors who have taken control. Witnesses said dead bodies were lying in the ruins of many buildings destroyed in air raids earlier in the week and there was no one in the streets of the centre of the city of 290,000. 'We can see the tanks. The tanks are everywhere,' one rebel fighter said by telephone. Eye witnesses said that the city had been almost flattened after a 13-and-a-half hour barrage from rockets, tanks and war planes The hellish scenes unfolded as senior officials in the U.S. spoke of their fears that the country had reached a painful stalemate. Senior officials believe that Gaddafi has solidified his control over some cities but ant-government protesters have a strong enough hold on other regions to remain locked in the stand off. As the standoff continues and hundreds of more lives continue to be lost, it has created a split in the U.S. government about whether to take military action. The Obama intervention is still looking at options for intervention while the European Union is preparing to impose stricter sanctions on the Libya government, including an asset freeze. 'What we're looking at right now—and things can change on a dime in these kinds of fluid conflicts—is basically a stalemate in certain parts of Libya,' another U.S. official told the Wall Street Journal. 'Gaddafi has solidified his control of some areas while the rebels have the upper hand in other places.' He added that Libyan forces now look stronger and more cohesive than they did several days ago when revolutionary zeal was at its peak. The new assessment on the North African country came after repeated calls from Britain and the U.S. for Gaddafi to relinquish power. Earlier today, there were reports that three private jets owned by Gaddafi has left Libya for Vienna, Athens and Egypt. Greek officials said they spotted one Libyan Airlines Falcon 900 jet as it briefly entered airspace for around 15 minutes earlier this morning. The sightings prompted speculation that Gaddafi or members of his family have fled the country. However, it later emerged that one aircraft had landed in Egypt carrying the head of the Libyan Authority for Supply and Logistics. Major-General Abdel Rahman Ben Ali al-Sayyid al-Zawy, was carrying a message from Gaddafi. Last night, the increasingly crazed despot had given his fourth rambling TV interview since protests began on February 15. Returning to familiar themes, the Libyan leader said the rebels wanted to pave the way for a new colonial era that would allow Britain, France and the United States to divide up the country and control its oil wealth. Making reference obliquely to unrest in the Arab world and elsewhere, he said: 'How can (Libyan) parents allow Tunisians, Egyptians, Algerians and Afghans to enrol your children?' He said rebels were drug-addled youths and al Qaeda-backed terrorists, and said he would die in Libya rather than surrender. One of his sons said if Gaddafi bowed to pressure and quit, Libya would descend into civil war. He promised to fight any attempt to impose a no-fly zone on the country which he said would merely be an excuse by the West to seize Libya's oil deposits. 'If Al Qaeda seizes Libya, that will amount to a huge disaster,' Gaddafi said. 'If they (Al Qaeda fighters) take this place over, the whole region, including Israel, will be dragged into chaos,' he said. 'Then Bin Laden may seize all of north Africa that faces Europe.' In the rebel-held stronghold of Benghazi, Libya's second city where the uprising started in mid-February, loudspeakers at the court house headquarters beseeched God to protect 'revolutionary fighters in Zawiyah'. The body of a Benghazi man killed in fighting around the oil town of Ras Lanuf while fighting arrived from the front and his coffin was placed before the courthouse where about 400 people were gathered. Women ululated, often done in celebrations. 'This is a kind of celebration, because he died in God's service," said Faraj Saber, a business consultant, 48. There was a protest of about 50 children in front of the courthouse, some with their mothers. One of the children read a speech from the first floor window of the courthouse. 'Libya has always been fearless and determined in the eyes of her enemies,' the child said, adding: 'Libya flies its flag with pride and freedom in the face of darkness ... We will not surrender. Public relations officer of PT Bio Farma Lala Nurlaela said the Indonesian company has won the trust of hundreds of companies in the world as a reliable vaccine supplier, polio in particular. "Hundreds of companies are relying on us for our vaccines," Lala said after familiarizing the vaccines to hundreds of higher secondary school students in Sukabumi Wednesday. In the meantime, a company doctor of PT Bio Farma, Erwin Setiawan said health has been developing favorably each year. | Indonesia Sets Footwear Export Target at USD3.2 Billion Posted: 10 Mar 2011 12:06 AM PST  JAKARTA - The government has set itself a target of exporting US$3.2 billion worth of footwear in 2011, Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu said. The exports are expected to increase by US$6 million from that in the previous year which stood at US$2.6 billion, the minister said here on Wednesday. "The increase is high because investment over the past two years also increased significantly, so that we set a target of US$3.2 billion this year and US$5 billion next year," the minister said. Chairman of the Indonesian Shoe-makers Association (Aprisindo) Eddy Widjanarko also has set a target of increasing the values of the association's exports to US$1 billion per annum, hoping that the government would provide its support. Mari E Pangestu said said that the government would continue to encourage and facilitate shoe-making industries to increase the quality of their products, designs and promotions so that Indonesia's market shares overseas would also increase. "Quality must be maintained. We have to fight with a good quality and reasonable prices. Therefore, it must be facilitated to improve and make its quality and standards good," Mari E Pangestu said. The minister said that the main competitors of Indonesian shoes were those of China and Vietnam. According to Eddy, the government's support was needed by small and medium scale shoe maker industries because in general the quality and design of domestically produce shoes had been improved, thus they were able to compete in the world market. | Taufik Hidayat's All-England Jinx Continues Posted: 10 Mar 2011 12:03 AM PST  Hidayat whom many regard as the finest player never to have won the world's oldest tournament may have lost his last chance to do as he slipped to a 21-10, 21-14 defeat. It was a strangely one-sided affair, especially as Hidayat never stopped trying to work his way back into the match, and there were only the briefest of moments, early in the second game, when he looked as though he might turn it around. "I don't know why I was so bad — I just wasn't feeling well," the second seed said. "I don't think he was really good. I just made so many unforced errors." That's the verdict of the company's director of chassis, powertrain and motorsport, Brian Gush, speaking exclusively to Drive at the Geneva motor show last week. "We would always look at things like that as long as they are a true Bentley," he confirmed. "Once the market research is done and it comes back saying the customers would accept that sort of thing then we would go for it… It comes back to what are our core values. As long as you have that great luxury, great comfort and superb driving dynamics it can be in any class of car." Recent European media reports have speculated an SUV based on the architecture of the Porsche Cayenne is already in the works for Bentley, as well as a five-door limousine developed with the next Panamera. A third new model line being mooted is a coupe targeted at the Maserati GranTurismo and Mercedes-Benz SL. Technology sharing with Porsche is a given for Bentley now that the German manufacturer has joined it as a Volkswagen group brand. Porsche's former R&D boss Wolfgang Durheimer has also just been appointed as chairman and CEO of Bentley and Bugatti. However, Gush questioned reports that Porsche would have the dominant engineering role among VW's sports-luxury brands. He insisted Porsche's arrival would not compromise the character of Bentley models. "We have always given our own character to the cars and we will continue to develop cars in our own way," he said. "We are not going to be pushed in one direction or another. We have our own DNA and we have created our own DNA. "There are a lot of ideas, but nothing that's come out saying Porsche is now going to the lead the engineering. "We are very fresh into Porsche integrating into the group and they have a lot of interesting technology that we will take a look at, and see whether it fits our purposes… We will develop things they can use and they will develop things we can use." Gush also downplayed reports that Porsche will be responsible for a highly modular and flexible architecture dubbed MSB that will underpin future Porches, Bentleys, Lamborghinis and the Audi A8. MSB is said to be a mid-front engined architecture with rear and all-wheel drive capability, substantial track and wheelbase flexibility and construction by a steel and aluminium matrix. The next generation Continental GT family (including Flying Spur sedan GTC convertible), a sub-Conti family and the replacement for the Mulsanne are all reportedly based on MSB. Gush suggested the architecture strategy still required some finalisation: "Those decisions and the names are all being thrown around, they are not fixed. There are certain ideas but they are not fixed and by no means has anyone decided what it is. "The new architecture – whatever you want to call it – D-type or MSB … we haven't got a name for it yet. We will not be pushed into a configuration as such, we will choose something that works for us." That means "something" capable of delivering on Bentley's traditional ability to combine extreme comfort with extreme performance. Gush acknowledged that it could well be a shared set of componentry, but that Bentley would refine it in its own way. Gush confirmed Bentley would continue to work on fuel-saving technologies following on from the W12 engine's E85 capability and the arrival of a new Audi-sourced 4.0-litre turbocharged V8 in the GT before the end of the year. | Posted: 10 Mar 2011 12:00 AM PST  Google yesterday admitted that up to 260,000 smartphones have been hacked after handset users unwittingly downloaded virus-infected apps. The threat came to light last week when the technology giant was forced to withdraw at least 50 apps from its official Android Market. Google operated a 'killswitch' and remotely removed all of the affected apps from peoples' phones. The firm has now sent text messages warning those affected that the malicious applications could access their personal information and take control of their handset. Studies have found that the dodgy applications were downloaded after they had been repackaged with a code that corrupted them. Google Android is an open-source software stack for mobile devices that includes an operating system, middleware and key applications. The deadly apps were simply copies of existing programs which had malware DroidDream found in them, and were swiftly taken off the site and recalled - but not before affecting hundreds of thousands of users. DroidDream fires sensitive data, such as a phone's unique ID number, to a remote server. In addition the malware will check if the phone has been infected already. If it hasn't the program bypasses security controls and hands its creator access to the handset. This means that the user can access information, including passwords for other personal things. Security expert Mikko Hypponen said the incident is embarrassing for Google because it shows the firm hasn't fully tested the safety of its apps. 'I do think Android phones are more vulnerable than any of the other major smartphones out there at the moment,' he told Metro. A Reddit user first noticed the problem late last week after one program, which teaches people how to play a guitar on their mobile handset, was titled under the name of a publisher who didn't write it. 'Lompolo' discovered that the application was a carbon-copy of the original, however it had a name change and virus code added to is. The user had worked out that the corrupted application had been downloaded more than 200,000 times after they were placed on the Marketplace. The latest version of the Android operating system, known as Gingerbread, is not vulnerable to the exploits DroidDream uses. | Tender for Jakarta's MRT to be Held Soon Posted: 09 Mar 2011 11:57 PM PST  JAKARTA - The Jakarta provincial administration will soon hold a tender pre-qualification for the mass rapid transit (MRT) project, following the completion of the basic design of the rail-based project in the capital city. "In the next or two months the pre-qualification could be started and the entire tender would be completed this year, and construction could be started in 2012 and in 2016 could be operated. So the MRT is no just a dream for Jakarta," Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo said after opening a seminar here on Tuesday on a plan to build an MRT in Jakarta. Fauzi said in the first stage the MRT would cover the Utara-Selatan, Lebakbulus- Hotel Indonesia route 15.5 kilometers long, with 10.5 kilometers on the surface and five kilometers underground. Six underground stations would be built along the route, namely at Masjid Al Azhar, Istora Senayan (Ratu Plaza), Bendungan Hilir, Setiabudi, Dukuh Atas, Bundaran Hotel Indonesia, and seven elevated stations, namely at Lebak Bulus, Fatmawati, Cipete Raya, H Nawi, Blok A, Blok M and Sisingamangaraja. "In the beginning of the operation, the MRT will have a capacity to carry 212,000 people per day, which can be raised to 960,000 per day. The route can be covered in 30 minutes and the tickets will be integrated with the other relevant modes of transportation," he said. The distance between the trains in the first stage was projected each five minutes, which could be increased to every three minutes. For that up to 144,322 billion yen would be needed or Rp15 trillion made of up fund as part of a 120,017 billion yen loan or only 0.2 pct and the money will be drawn from the State Budget and regional budget 24.305 billion yen. "It has been agreed that 30 pct of the total work on the MRT project used Japanese products and the rest local," he said. Head the Jakarta regional planning agency Sarwo Handayani said that the tender for the construction of the MRT in Jakarta, first stage, will be carried out in the 2011 June-July. Nurdin, who was jailed in 2007 for misusing funds but continued to run the PSSI from his cell, is seeking a third term despite his premiership resulting in angry demonstrations in Jakarta and calls for his departure. FIFA president Sepp Blatter had made the ruling to ban Nurdin from running in the March 26 election during a meeting in Zurich on Tuesday, a local newspaper quoted Indonesian ambassador to Switzerland Joko Susilo as saying. "Sepp Blatter said FIFA upholds the statutes that states a convict cannot lead a football organization," Joko said. "If Nurdin is reelected, FIFA won't legitimise the election result. They want Indonesian football to be much better." FIFA was unable to provide immediate comment when contacted by Reuters. Nurdin denied he had been banned by FIFA. "The information from the ambassador must be untrue because the decision of FIFA's executive committee meeting (on March 3) has been received by the PSSI and it is impossible for FIFA to issue any decisions outside the meeting," he was quoted as telling local news broadcaster of a private TV station. Separate Indonesian reports on Wednesday alleged other Indonesian soccer identities, including oil tycoon Arifin Panigoro, had also been banned from running for the 2011-2015 term. Panigoro launched the rebel Indonesian Premier League soccer league in January in defiance of FIFA and was banned by the PSSI's electoral commission from running against Nurdin last month, sparking violent demonstrations. | Civet 'Cat' Dung Fuels Indonesia's Luxury Coffee Posted: 09 Mar 2011 11:53 PM PST  JAKARTA - Indonesia's self-proclaimed "King of Luwak", Gunawan Supriadi, is having a hard time keeping up with demand for the beans excreted by his stable of pampered civet "cats". And he's not alone. Demand for coffee brewed with beans plucked from the dung of the furry, weasel-like creatures — known locally as luwaks — is surging among well-healed connoisseurs around the world, exporters say. About 40 civets at Supriadi's plantation in West Lampung district, Sumatra, provide the intestinal machinery for his Raja Luwak (King of Luwak) brand of bean. Lampung is the undisputed capital of luwak coffee. "My target is to have 150 civets soon because I have to meet the surge in demand," Supriadi said. "In 2008, I gathered about 50 kilograms of luwak beans and sold them to local distributors. In 2009, I sold 300 kilograms. In 2010, I sold 1.2 tonnes." The "golden droppings" of the luwak, or Asian palm civet, fetch up to $800 per kilogram (two pounds) in countries like the United States, Australia, Japan, South Korea and Singapore. It's another story altogether at retail level. Single cups of the world's most expensive coffee have been known to sell for almost $100 in specialty outlets in London. The civets play two roles. Firstly, they tend to choose the best berries to digest. Experts say wild civets are the most discerning, but their droppings are also the most difficult to harvest. Having nibbled off the thin outer layer of fruit, the civets put their digestive juices to work. The enzymes penetrate the beans — usually arabica in Sumatra — and change their chemical balance in subtle ways. The end product, after a good wash and light roasting, lacks the bitterness of ordinary coffee and has a unique, soft flavour. "If luwak coffee is a car, then it must be a Rolls-Royce," Supriadi said. Exporter Doni Irawan said his sales had grown 50 percent in the past year. "It has become the prima donna of coffee due to its high price and limited supply. It keeps gaining new, dedicated fans," he said. The tradition of luwak coffee stretches back hundreds of years to the time of Dutch rule in Indonesia. Banned from their colonial masters' coffee crops, indigenous farmers took to collecting, cleaning and roasting undigested beans found in the forest-dwelling animals' droppings. The Southeast Asian archipelago of 240 million people is now the world's main producer of luwak coffee, but the industry has really only flourished in recent years and official export figures are hard to find. Retailers said demand was also high among status-conscious members of Indonesia's burgeoning middle class. In a country where around 40 percent of the population earns less than $2 a day, luwak coffee sells for about $8 a cup in up-market shopping malls. "I never used to like coffee at all, but after trying luwak coffee my world changed. I became addicted," Jakarta resident Galang Sulung Ramanda, 24, told AFP. "I also drink it for its health benefits. I heard that it can prevent asthma, Parkinson's, colon cancer and diabetes," he said. The success of luwak coffee has given birth to a plethora of fake brands, which promise that special civet experience at half the usual price. Not to be outdone, Vietnamese entrepreneurs say they have developed a way to chemically treat regular beans to produce the same luwak taste.  |
| 7 killed, 50 hurt in Libya`s bin Jawad fight: hospital Posted: 09 Mar 2011 09:45 AM PST  Ajdabiya, Libya - At least seven people were killed and more than 50 wounded in clashes between Libyan rebels and supporters of Moamer Kadhafi at the coastal hamlet of Bin Jawad, hospital figures showed Monday. The casualty list posted at Ajdabiya hospital, where most of the wounded were taken after Sunday`s clashes, reported seven dead and about 52 people hurt. Witnesses said another six or seven dead were taken to the rebels` main stronghold of Benghazi, Libya`s second city and further to the east, but that was not immediately possible to confirm. The dead were all volunteer fighters, mostly from Benghazi. The hospital in Ras Lanuf, which was closest to the fighting, was utterly deserted on Monday. A casualty list was pinned up on the window, giving a death toll of seven with 59 wounded, an AFP reporter said.  |

According to a presidential statement on Tuesday, the agreement was reached by Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and his Philippine counterpart Benigno S Aquino III. The two leaders agreed to exchange intelligence data and information to fight and root out the activities of certain quarters related to terrorist networks. "Both countries, Indonesia and Philippines, are facing the threat of terrorism," Yudhoyono said. The Indonesian President said there were certain connections about the terrorist network in Indonesia and those in the Philippines as well as the in other countries. In fact, in some cases, some foreign nationals were found as terrorists in Indonesia, Yudhoyono said. "The terrorists in the South East Asia region have high mobility," Yudhoyono said. Therefore, President Yudhoyono called on the leaders of South Asian countries to unite to fight terrorism. Meanwhile, President Benigno S. Aquino III said Indonesia and the Philippines had many things in common but both were also facing the threat of terrorism. President Aquino also wanted to improve the cooperation in the maritime border sector to halt the mobility of terrorists. The maritime border cooperation between the two countries would be intensified as there was a signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two. In addition, the two presidents also signed an MoU on cooperation to reinforce their national police forces to fight trans-border crime. | Jasa Marga's 2011 Revenue Likely to Rise 11-12 Pct Posted: 09 Mar 2011 09:41 AM PST  Jakarta - Indonesia's toll road operator PT Jasa Marga forecast its revenue to grow by 11% to 12% this year to around IDR4.8 trillion ($546 million) from an estimated IDR4.3 trillion in 2010, Chief Executive Frans Sunito said Wednesday. State-controlled Jasa Marga posted revenue of IDR3.69 trillion in 2009. The biggest toll road operator by assets and revenue will likely publish its audited 2010 financial results later this month. "We're planning to invest around IDR25 trillion within the next three years in toll roads in Java island. This is also in line with government efforts to improve infrastructure across the country," Sunito said after a meeting with State Enterprises Minister. The company may invest in construction projects or acquire stakes in other toll road operators, Sunito said, adding that it will use internal cash and bank loans to meet its investment needs.  |

The duo were charged with improper conduct for "inappropriate language". Wenger was involved in a furious exchange with Massimo Busacca after Tuesday's 3-1 loss, which eliminated the Gunners from the Champions League. The Frenchman was incensed by the decision to show Robin van Persie a second yellow card in the second half. With the score at 1-1 and Arsenal leading 3-2 on aggregate, Van Persie was given his marching orders in the 56th minute for shooting at goal one second after Busacca had blown the whistle for offside. Nasri was among a group of Arsenal players who remonstrated with the referee, with Van Persie later claiming he had not heard the whistle because of the noise from the 95,000 crowd. Wenger confronted Busacca at the final whistle and their angry exchanges continued in the tunnel. "If you play football at a certain level you cannot understand this decision," Wenger said. "It killed a promising, fantastic match. If it's a bad tackle, OK, but frankly it is embarrassing." Uefa studied reports from Busacca before charging Wenger and Nasri. The disciplinary case will be heard on 17 March. Footage showed stones being thrown by both sides in the square. At least two people were reportedly injured. The people who entered Tahrir wanted to force the activists continuing a sit-in out of the square, reports say. Tahrir Square was the epicentre of protests that forced President Hosni Mubarak to step down last month. "Hundreds of men carrying knives and swords entered Tahrir," the AFP news agency quoted a report on Egypt's state TV as saying. The TV channel showed footage of hundreds of people involved in a stand-off and throwing stones at each other. "A group of gangsters attacked us with stones, they seemed to be wanting us to leave the square," Gamal Hussein, one of the pro-democracy protester, later told Reuters. Groups of activists have continued to gather in Tahrir Square even after Mr Mubarak's departure. They are demanding a complete break with the Mubarak regime. But critics say it is time for life to return to normal in the Egyptian capital. Insecurity has been rife across Egypt after police disappeared from the streets of major cities during the mass protests. On Tuesday, at least 13 people died and 140 were injured in clashes between Muslims and Coptic Christians in Cairo. | Obama names Gary Locke new US ambassador to China Posted: 09 Mar 2011 09:31 AM PST  President Barack Obama has nominated Commerce Secretary Gary Locke as the new US ambassador to China. If confirmed by the US Senate Mr Locke will replace current ambassador Jon Huntsman, who is due to leave the post on 30 April. Mr Huntsman announced his resignation last month, fuelling speculation he may be preparing a 2012 White House bid. Mr Locke, whose father was born in China, was the first Chinese-American to serve as US commerce secretary. Mr Locke, who joined the Obama administration in March 2009, is a former two-term Democratic governor of Washington state. As commerce secretary, he has long overseen negotiations with China on trade issues. He has urged Beijing to move further and faster to open its markets to foreign firms, to loosen its currency controls, and to clamp down on rampant piracy of intellectual property. President Obama has set a goal of doubling US exports in five years to help America's economic recovery. Mr Locke's appointment as ambassador to China, the world's fastest growing major economy, and one with which America has a huge trade deficit at a record $273bn (£168bn) last year, will be a key part of that strategy, says the BBC's Damian Grammaticas in Beijing. Mr Huntsman, a Republican former Utah governor, was appointed Beijing envoy by Mr Obama in 2009. Before that, he was intimately involved in the 2008 US presidential election as national co-chair of Senator John McCain's campaign. In an interview with Newsweek magazine in January, when he was asked about presidential ambitions, the 50-year-old replied: "We may have one final run left in our bones."
