| New Opening for 'Spidey,' Green Goblin Gets Stuck Posted: 12 Mar 2011 06:19 AM PST  Broadway's stunt-heavy, $65 million "Spider-Man" musical has experienced another technical glitch that left its lead villain dangling in midair, and the troubled production will shut down for more than three weeks this spring for an overhaul. Lead producers Michael Cohl and Jeremiah J. Harris said in a statement Friday that "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark," which has been in previews for a record 103 performances, would officially open June 14. The show's opening, delayed six times, was to have opened last on March 15. The final preview performance before the shutdown will be April 17. Performances will be canceled from April 19-May 11, with previews resuming on May 12. On Wednesday, producers announced that Tony Award-winning director Julie Taymor would no longer direct the show, and a new creative team was brought in to change and polish the flawed musical, which has also been plagued with a series of injuries to cast members and aerial stunt mishaps. The latest occurred Friday when the Green Goblin's flight system failed during a fight scene, leaving him hanging over the stage for about three minutes before stagehands lowered him down. It was the second time this week that a technical problem interrupted a scene with the Goblin. The replacement of Taymor in her day-to-day duties was a stunning development for the heralded director of "The Lion King," a megahit that is No. 3 at the box office more than a decade after it opened. Taymor, known for her bold and creative artistic vision, is believed to have been pushed aside because she wouldn't accept the need for outside help and significant changes to "Spider-Man," which she co-wrote with Glen Berger. "I was hoping that by planning for a March show it would be up to speed," said Sarah Marchitto, 31, of Linden, N.J., who spent $300 for tickets to Friday night's show as a birthday present for her boyfriend, a Spider-Man fan. | Nanodiamonds Make Cancer Drugs Work Better Posted: 12 Mar 2011 06:15 AM PST  A new technology may make cancer drugs more effective and ease the burden of chemotherapy. Scientists are combining cancer medicine with tiny particles of carbon called nanodiamonds. These diamonds are nothing like the gems used in jewelry. They're just a few nanometers across. A nanometer is one billionth of a meter. "Nanodiamonds are small carbon particles that kind of resemble like an angular soccer ball," says Northwestern University engineering professor Dean Ho, who led the latest study. "And what's interesting about the nanodiamond surfaces is that they like to attract water, for example, as well as other molecules, like drugs." Ho and his colleagues used this property to bind anti-cancer drugs to nanodiamonds. He says normally the tumor rejects the drug, but not when it's attached to the nanoparticle. "We found that when we bound the drugs to the nanodiamonds, the tumors were capable of retaining the drugs for a much longer period of time," Ho says. In experiments using laboratory mice with liver and breast cancer, they found the drug was more effective and had fewer side effects. The researchers also found they could increase the dosage to a level that would be lethal if given without the nanodiamonds. "Once we modified this same elevated and toxic dose with nanodiamonds and gave them to the animals, not only did all the animals survive the study, their tumors were actually reduced to their smallest sizes," Ho says. The study shows the effectiveness of using nanodiamonds to treat cancer in mice, but further studies will be needed before the technology can be used in humans. In the meantime, Ho and his colleagues have been exploring other potential medical uses of nanodiamonds. "We've also observed in our lab the ability to bind [to the nanodiamonds] other types of drugs. These include therapeutic proteins. One example includes a study where we delivered insulin for wound-healing applications potentially." And in other lab experiments, they used nanodiamonds to deliver bits of DNA such as might be used in gene therapy. Ho says it was 70 times more efficient than DNA delivered through conventional methods. By the way, despite the high-priced name, nanodiamonds may not add much to the cost of cancer treatment. They are actually produced from the byproducts of industrial explosions, such as used in mining. "So even though they're referred to as diamonds, we believe that they can be a potentially economical product for modifying the drugs." source : voanews.com  |
| Japan Trying to Contain Potential Nuclear Crisis Following Massive Earthquake Posted: 12 Mar 2011 05:40 AM PST  Japan moved quickly Saturday to contained a crisis at two nuclear power plants damaged when a massive earthquake and tsunami struck the country's northeast coast. Government officials declared a state of emergency and launched a massive, military-led rescue operation. Japanese officials say the 8.9 magnitude quake and subsequent tsunami knocked out power and caused cooling systems to fail at two plants in Fukushima, about 240 kilometers north of Tokyo. Officials at first believed there was a possibility that nuclear fuel rods at one of the plants may have begun melting. Later, officials said radioactive pressure was successfully relieved by opening valves and allowing the release of radioactive steam. But Japanese television broadcast images showing what appeared to be extensive damage to the outer structure of the building that houses the reactor. The paneling on the steel-framed building appeared to blow off in an explosion and smoke could be seen billowing from the structure. Japanese news media reported at least four people injured. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano commented on the incident at a Tokyo news conference. Edano said the government was investigating what happened at the plant. He urged people to evacuate at least 10 kilometers away from the plant, a distance that was later doubled to 20 kilometers. Radioactive material has been found outside one reactor, where officials say they are trying to determine if a meltdown has occurred. The situation at the nuclear plants comes as the government launched a large-scale military-led rescue operation to help victims of Friday's massive quake and tsunami. Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan said he is sending 50,000 troops to aid rescue and recovery efforts. He said 190 military planes and 25 ships have also been sent to the devastated areas. More than 50 countries have offered Japan help and some has already begun arriving. A team from South Korea touched down in Tokyo on Saturday afternoon. The U.S. military, which maintains several bases in Japan, is also taking part in the rescue effort. | South Korean Students Learn English from Robot Teacher Posted: 12 Mar 2011 05:39 AM PST  Many South Korean families spend thousands of dollars a year on English language education for their children. Students attend private academies often until late at night everyday. Most such schools hire teachers from abroad, but a team of engineers has created a robot that they hope will eventually replace foreign instructors. Engkey wheels around the front of a classroom at the Hagjeong Primary School in Daegu. The egg-shaped robot asks the class - six fourth-grade students - to repeat English phrases and teaches them children's songs in English. But Engkey's voice is not its own. It is connected via teleconference to the Philippines, where a teacher conducts the class through a monitor. An image of a Caucasian woman appears on Engkey's LCD panel head, although she is not the teacher in the Philippines. But Engkey's creators say this robot is much more than a video screen on wheels. Kim Mun-sang is director of the Intelligent Robotics Program at the government-funded Korea Institute for Science and Technology in Seoul. He explains how the robot works. "We have some perception technology," Kim said. "We can detect the motion of the English teacher. As soon as the teacher moves his hand, the robot raises its hand, if the teacher for example laughs, we can detect his laughing expression. So the robot can do just like the English teacher does." Kim say Engkey also has an autonomous mode in which it can recognize a student's English speech and correct pronunciation. Kim says because of South Korea's strong emphasis on learning English, robots can make up for the shortfall in foreign teachers. "In Korea there is a lot of demand for English learning, so, they need a very good English lessons from native speakers, but as you know it is not easy to have good quality of English native teachers in Korea at once, there are not so many," Kim added. Kim adds that Engkey will save schools money. He says the cost to build a robot and hire a Filipino teacher to work with it is around $20,000 a year. That is roughly half the cost of supporting a foreign teacher in Korea. He says if the Engkey pilot program here in Daegu proves a success, then more robots could be used in after-school tutoring. So far, students at the Hagjeong School give Engkey high marks. One 10-year-old boy, who says his English name is Tony, admits he was a little nervous about the robot at first, but likes its singing and dancing And 10-year-old Charlotte says she likes the robot teacher better than human teachers. But some teachers think a robot cannot replace the real thing. Yu Do-hyun lectures in English and education at Seoul's Kookmin University. She says Engkey's novelty will wear off quickly. "At first children will like to see the Engkey and play with Engkey, learning from Engkey, but after several classes, they are not interested anymore," Yu said. And Yu adds that learning from a robot deprives students of the main reason for studying a foreign language, human interaction. "Communication is between humans, so they need practicing with native speakers, human teachers," Yu added. "Even though they practice English a lot with the robots, when they meet human native speakers, they will be very nervous, because they haven't conversed with real speakers." | Hundreds Killed in Tsunami after 8.9 Japan Quake Posted: 12 Mar 2011 05:13 AM PST  TOKYO — A ferocious tsunami unleashed by Japan's biggest recorded earthquake slammed into its eastern coast Friday, killing hundreds of people as it carried away ships, cars and homes, and triggered widespread fires that burned out of control. Hours later, the waves washed ashore on Hawaii and the U.S. West coast, where evacuations were ordered from California to Washington but little damage was reported. The entire Pacific had been put on alert — including coastal areas of South America, Canada and Alaska — but waves were not as bad as expected. In northeastern Japan, the area around a nuclear power plant was evacuated after the reactor's cooling system failed and pressure began building inside. Police said 200 to 300 bodies were found in the northeastern coastal city of Sendai, the city in Miyagi prefecture, or state, closest to the epicenter. But authorities said they weren't able to reach the area because of damage to the roads. A police official, who declined to be named because of department policy, said it may be a while before rescuers could reach the area to get more precise body count. So far, they have confirmed 178 were killed, with 584 missing. Police also said 947 people were injured. The magnitude-8.9 offshore quake triggered a 23-foot (seven-meter) tsunami and was followed for hours by more than 50 aftershocks, many of them more than magnitude 6.0. In the early hours of Saturday, a magnitude-6.7 earthquake struck the central, mountainous part of the country — far from the original quake's epicenter. It was not immediately clear if this latest quake was related to the others. Friday's massive quake shook dozens of cities and villages along a 1,300-mile (2,100-kilometer) stretch of coast, including Tokyo, hundreds of miles (kilometers) from the epicenter. A large section of Kesennuma, a town of 70,000 people in Miyagi, burned furiously into the night with no apparent hope of being extinguished, public broadcaster NHK said. Koto Fujikawa, 28, was riding a monorail when the quake hit and had to pick her way along narrow, elevated tracks to the nearest station. "I thought I was going to die," Fujikawa, who works for a marketing company, said. "It felt like the whole structure was collapsing." Scientists said the quake ranked as the fifth-largest earthquake in the world since 1900 and was nearly 8,000 times stronger than one that devastated Christchurch, New Zealand, last month. "The energy radiated by this quake is nearly equal to one month's worth of energy consumption" in the United States, U.S. Geological Survey Scientist Brian Atwater told The Associated Press. President Barack Obama pledged U.S. assistance following what he called a potentially "catastrophic" disaster. He said one U.S. aircraft carrier is already in Japan, and a second is on its way. A U.S. ship was also heading to the Marianas Islands to assist as needed, he added. An American man working at one of the nuclear plants near the coast when the quake hit said the whole building shook and debris fell from the ceiling. Danny Eudy, 52, a technician employed by Pasedena, Texas-based Atlantic Plant Maintenance, and his colleagues escaped the building just as the tsunami hit, his wife told The Associated Press. "He walked through so much glass that his feet were cut. It slowed him down," said Pineville, Louisiana, resident Janie Eudy, who spoke to her husband by phone after the quake. The group watched homes and vehicles be carried away in the wave and found their hotel mostly swept away when they finally reached it. The government later ordered about 3,000 residents near that plant — in the city of Onahama — to move back at least two miles (three kilometers) from the plant. The reactor was not leaking radiation but its core remained hot even after a shutdown. The plant is 170 miles (270 kilometers) northeast of Tokyo. Japan's nuclear safety agency said pressure inside the reactor at the Fukushima No. 1 power plant has risen to 1.5 times the level considered normal, and slightly radioactive vapor may be released to reduce the pressure. The Defense Ministry said it had sent dozens of troops trained to deal with chemical disasters to the plant in case of a radiation leak. Trouble was reported at two other nuclear plants, but there was no radiation leak at either of them. Prime Minister Naoto Kan planned to hold an emergency Cabinet meeting early Saturday morning and them take a helicopter to the quake-hit area and the troubled nuclear power plants. Japan's coast guard said it was searching for 80 dock workers on a ship that was swept away from a shipyard in Miyagi. Even for a country used to earthquakes, this one was of horrific proportions because of the tsunami that crashed ashore, swallowing everything in its path as it surged several miles (kilometers) inland before retreating. The apocalyptic images on Japanese TV of powerful, debris-filled waves, uncontrolled fires and a ship caught in a massive whirlpool resembled scenes from a Hollywood disaster movie. Large fishing boats and other vessels rode high waves ashore, slamming against overpasses or scraping under them and snapping power lines along the way. Upturned and partially submerged cars bobbed in the water. Ships anchored in ports crashed against each other. At least two trains were swept off their tracks along the coast, but no one was hurt, though five passengers from one train scrambled to the roof of a nearby house. The tsunami roared over embankments, washing anything in its path inland before reversing directions and carrying the cars, homes and other debris out to sea. Flames shot from some of the homes, probably because of burst gas pipes. Waves of muddy waters flowed over farmland near Sendai, carrying buildings, some of them ablaze. Drivers attempted to flee. Sendai airport was inundated with thick, muddy debris that included cars, trucks, buses and even light planes. Highways to the worst-hit coastal areas buckled. Telephone lines snapped. Train service in northeastern Japan and in Tokyo, which normally serve 10 million people a day, were suspended, leaving untold numbers stranded in stations or roaming the streets. Tokyo's Narita airport was closed indefinitely. In one town alone on the northeastern coast, Minami-soma, some 1,800 houses were destroyed or badly ravaged, a Defense Ministry spokeswoman said. As night fell and temperatures hovered just above freezing, tens of thousands of people remained stranded in Tokyo, where the rail network was still down. The streets were jammed with cars, buses and trucks trying to get out of the city. The city set up 33 shelters in city hall, on university campuses and in government offices, but many planned to spend the night at 24-hour cafes, hotels and offices. Japanese automakers Toyota, Nissan and Honda halted production at some assembly plants in areas hit by the quake. One worker was killed and more than 30 injured after being crushed by a collapsing wall at a Honda Motor Co. research facility in northeastern Tochigi prefecture, the company said. Jesse Johnson, a native of the U.S. state of Nevada who lives in Chiba, north of Tokyo, was eating at a sushi restaurant with his wife when the quake hit. "At first it didn't feel unusual, but then it went on and on. So I got myself and my wife under the table," he told The Associated Press. "I've lived in Japan for 10 years, and I've never felt anything like this before. The aftershocks keep coming. It's gotten to the point where I don't know whether it's me shaking or an earthquake." NHK said more than 4 million buildings were without power in Tokyo and its suburbs. A large fire erupted at the Cosmo oil refinery in the city of Ichihara and burned out of control with 100-foot (30-meter) flames whipping into the sky. "Our initial assessment indicates that there has already been enormous damage," Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said. "We will make maximum relief effort based on that assessment." He said the Defense Ministry was sending troops to the hardest-hit region. A utility aircraft and several helicopters were on the way. Also in Miyagi prefecture, a fire broke out in a turbine building of a nuclear power plant, but it was later extinguished, said Tohoku Electric Power Co. A reactor area of a nearby plant was leaking water, the company said. But it was unclear if the leak was caused by the tsunami or something else. There were no reports of radioactive leaks at any of Japan's nuclear plants. Jefferies International Ltd., a global investment banking group, estimated overall losses of about $10 billion. Hiroshi Sato, a disaster management official in northern Iwate prefecture, said officials were having trouble getting an overall picture of the destruction. "We don't even know the extent of damage. Roads were badly damaged and cut off as tsunami washed away debris, cars and many other things," he said. The U.S. Geological Survey said the 2:46 p.m. quake was magnitude 8.9, the biggest to hit Japan since record-keeping began in the late 1800s and one of the biggest ever recorded in the world. The quake struck at a depth of six miles (10 kilometers), about 80 miles (125 kilometers) off the eastern coast, the agency said. The area is 240 miles (380 kilometers) northeast of Tokyo. Several quakes hit the same region in recent days, including one measured at magnitude 7.3 on Wednesday that caused no damage. A tsunami warning was extended to a number of areas in the Pacific, Southeast Asia and Latin America, including Japan, Russia, Indonesia, New Zealand and Chile. In the Philippines, authorities ordered an evacuation of coastal communities, but no unusual waves were reported. Thousands fled homes in Indonesia after officials warned of a tsunami up to 6 feet (2 meters) high, but waves of only 4 inches (10 centimeters) were measured. No big waves came to the Northern Mariana Islands, a U.S. territory, either. The first waves hit Hawaii about 9 a.m. EST (1400 GMT). A tsunami about 7 feet (2.1 meters) high was recorded on Maui and a wave at least 3 feet (a meter) high was recorded on Oahu and Kauai. Officials warned that the waves would continue and could get larger. Japan's worst previous quake was a magnitude 8.3 temblor in 1923 in Kanto that killed 143,000 people, according to USGS. A 7.2-magnitude quake in Kobe in 1995 killed 6,400 people. Japan lies on the "Ring of Fire" — an arc of earthquake and volcanic zones stretching around the Pacific where about 90 percent of the world's quakes occur, including the one that triggered the Dec. 26, 2004, Indian Ocean tsunami that killed an estimated 230,000 people in 12 nations. All sub-district and village heads in the region had been advised to evacuate, Head of the National Unity and the Politics (Kesbangpol) Office of North Gorontalo Djamaludin Butang said here Friday. "The Sub-district heads had asked the residents to evacuate to the hills," Djamaludin said. The sub-district head of Gentuma Jaya, Marzuki Tome used radio wave and short text messages to order residents to evacuate. The authorities are cooperating with the police and the military in helping evacuate the residents, especially the children, to the nearest hills. Some of the citizens are now in houses on the hills. While people living near the beaches in Ternate and some other regions in North Maluku moved to higher ground to avoid the tsunami which is moving southward to Indonesia. Earlier, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) warned the people in North Maluku, Papua and North Sulawesi to find higher and safer places to avoid the tsunami from Japan. "I knew from the news on television that North Maluku will be one of the areas in Indonesia to be hit by the tsunami. That's why I and my family go to my relative's house in the higher ground," said Abu Bakar, a resident of Dufa-Dufa, Ternate. People in Ternate who were evacuating to the higher ground brought their important papers only. Traditional markets and shopping centers which were located either at high land or shore areas were still operated. "I heard that the tsunami will reach North Maluku at 8 pm, so there's still time and no need to close the store to soon," said Lutvi, a local seller at the Gamalama Central Market. Meanwhile, fishermen in Ternate did not go fishing after the warning from BMKG. "I discouraged fishing due to the warning. I'm afraid of the impact of the tsunami," Kadir, a fisherman, said. In the meantime, Ternate local government had instructed all leaders in its regions to tell their people not to be too close to the beaches. "So exporters, importers and business world alike should be patient or switch to new markets other than Japan," Edy Putra Irawady, deputy for industry and trade to the coordinating minister for economic affairs, said here on Friday.The natural disaster might also indirectly affect the domestic economy. He said two-way trade between Japan and Indonesia might be disrupted and Japanese investment in Indonesia might decline. Meanwhile, Chief of the Banking Affairs of the Indonesian Young Businessmen Association (HIPMI) Silmy Karim said the disaster might affect the domestic economy now that Japan was one of Indonesia's main export destinations. He said the Japanese companies which had so far imported part of their raw materials from Indonesia were expected to reduce their imports. "Our alumunium and gas exports to Japan will likely fall sharply but such is not the case with CPO and coal exports," he said. He predicted the Japanese economy would soon recover from the disaster although its impact on the Japanese economy would be felt in three to six months' time thanks to the country's experience in facing such difficult situation. Acting Chief of the Fiscal Policy Board (BKF) at the Finance Ministry Bambang Brodjonegoro expressed hope the disaster would have no prolonged impact particularly on the Indonesian economy. "Japan is relatively more prepared (than any other nations) to deal with the impact of disasters so Friday's quake and tsunami will likely have a relatively small impact on its economy," he said. Last year, Indonesia's non-oil/non-gas exports to Japan hit a record high of US$16.49 billion, making it the biggest market for Indonesia's exports. | Over 1,000 Feared Dead after Tsunami Sweeps Japan Posted: 12 Mar 2011 05:07 AM PST  More than 1,000 people are feared to have died after the sixth largest earthquake in recorded history devastated Japan yesterday. The massive earthquake - 8,000 times stronger than the one that hit New Zealand last month - sent a catastrophic 33 foot tsunami hurtling across the Pacific Ocean. Last night the strength of the quake increased to a staggering 9.0 on the Richter scale. Thousands of people were also forced to flee for their lives as the wall of water bore down on them, sweeping away everything in its path. Huge fires burned unabated across large parts of the country as damaged oil refineries and gas works billowed black smoke into the sky. Half the country was understood to be without power, with four million homes in Tokyo alone being cut off, while the army has been deployed to the quake-hit areas to help relief efforts. However those relief efforts were hampered by a number of aftershocks, including a 6.6 magnitude tremor which hit Tokyo and caused already damaged buildings to shake further. Elsewhere, two high-speed bullet trains were missing alongside a cruise ship carrying 100 passengers that was swept away when the wave hit. One of the trains was reported to be carrying 400 passengers. A state of emergency was declared at a nuclear power plant in Fukushima after the quake caused the cooling system to fail. Tonight, the Japanese government confirmed that they would release radioactive vapor to ease high pressure that had built up inside the reactor. Between 200 and 300 bodies have been found in Sendai city, while another 151 were confirmed killed, with 547 missing. Police also said 798 people were injured. Hundreds of Britons are believed to be in the country. Many have spoken of the terrifying moment that the quake struck. With the death toll rising, it is feared thousands more are at risk as the true scale of the devastation becomes apparent. Kesennuma, a town of 70,000 people in Miyagi, burned furiously into the night with no apparent hope of being extinguished, Japan's public broadcaster NHK said. Tsunami warnings were also issued across the entire Pacific, as far away as South America, Canada, Alaska and the entire U.S. West Coast. Hawaii and a number of low-lying islands including Guam were hit by the waves while The Red Cross has warned that the tsunami is higher than many of the islands themselves. The first waves hit the island of Kauai at around 3.15am local time as the repercussions of the earthquake ripped through the ocean. Kahului, on the island of Maui, has been worst hit. | Posted: 12 Mar 2011 05:06 AM PST  It is an issue that many law enforcement agencies and governments don't want to discuss, according to Professor Andrew Dempster, a specialist in satellite navigation signal processing and receiver design. The problem? Australia and the world's reliance on global navigation satellite systems (GNSS), commonly known to many as GPS, and its vulnerability to be deliberately jammed or unintentionally interfered with. "There is ... [a] group of people (users) who don't want to talk about it," said the professor, who works at the UNSW School of Surveying and Spatial Information Systems. "They don't want to draw attention to the fact that GPS can be jammed. They don't want people to know that it's vulnerable. And included in that group are all the major telcos, some of the authorities that track vehicles and I imagine that the police are the same – that they don't talk about it that much." Critical infrastructure that can be impacted by interference can include plane and airport navigation systems, emergency service vehicles, ships and security vans, some of which carry large amounts of money. Researchers in Britain have gone as far as saying that GPS failures could lead to "loss of life". One known example of an airport and planes landing there being impacted by unintentional interference has already occurred in the US, the professor said. According to The Economist, a driver who passed the Newark airport in New Jersey each day had a GPS jammer installed in his truck for personal reasons. The Economist said it took two months in late 2009 for investigators to track down the problem, which led to "brief daily breaks in reception". Professor Dempster said the matter of interference with GPS was "a significant hazard for military, industrial and civilian transport and communication systems" because criminals had "worked out that they can jam GPS". He also said that because GPS signals were weak, they could "easily be outpunched by poorly controlled signals from television towers, devices such as laptops and MP3 players, or even mobile satellite services." But it's not only interference from here on earth. Solar flares in space can also cause havoc for satellites. Professor Dempster said he had found one such example of unintentional interference in North Sydney, where an SBS TV tower was causing GPS signals nearby to be degraded. "There will be times if you were driving along past there [where] your [car's] GPS would drop out there for 30 seconds or maybe less," he said. "But you wouldn't really notice it," he added. He said a car's GPS navigation device dropped out for "all sorts of reasons". "I think one of the problems we have with interference or detecting interference is that many people would have observed it and not known that it was happening," he said. Many people may have even noticed interference with their car's GPS when driving, he said. However, the fact there was interference was most likely unknown to drivers because the signal usually returned to normal after a short period of time. But it was not only interference Professor Dempster was worried about. "What has happened is GPS has now been around for a while and a number of navigation systems have been retired because GPS has overtaken them," he said. "So there were a number of backups that sort of existed and as we became more reliant and also more confident in GPS, some of these backups have been removed." Planes for example, before GPS, used many other ways of finding an airfield other than GPS. But those systems were being phased out because "they're expensive to maintain" and "they only work in the local area". Although his workshop on the matter, held on Wednesday in Canberra, heard from Australia's communications regulator, the ACMA, that it had not prosecuted a single person for jamming a signal in Australia, Professor Dempster said that he was still concerned. "There is certainly evidence ... with eastern European criminals making pretty widespread use of GPS for that sort of purpose – for making high-value assets and vehicles ... (the location of those assets) unavailable [using jamming devices]," he said. Many of Professor Dempster's concerns were echoed in a report released this week by the Royal Academy of Engineering in London, which suggested that developed nations had become too reliant on GPS systems. The report said everything from commercial aircraft and the tracking of cargo to the opening of train doors at stations were vulnerable, with consequences ranging from "the inconvenient - such as passenger information system failures - to possible loss of life - such as interruptions to emergency services communications". "GPS and other GNSS are so useful and so cheap to build into equipment that we have become almost blindly reliant on the data they give us," said Dr Martyn Thomas, chairman of the academy's GNSS working group. In a statement put out alongside the report, it said that the range of applications using the technology were "now so broad that, without adequate independent backup, signal failure or interference could potentially affect safety systems and other critical parts of the economy". It recommended, among other things, that critical services include GNSS vulnerabilities "in their risk register and that these are reviewed regularly and mitigated effectively". All of this was why the UNSW team were working with the University of Adelaide and private company GPSat Systems on a project which aimed to develop geo-location jamming-detection technology. | British queen sends message of sympathy to Japan Posted: 12 Mar 2011 04:54 AM PST  London - Britain`s Queen Elizabeth II sent a message of sympathy to Japan on Friday following the massive earthquake that devastated northeastern Japan and killed more than 380 people. In her message to Japan`s Emperor Akihito, the queen said: "I was saddened to hear of the tragic loss of life caused by the earthquake which has struck northeast Japan today. "Prince Philip joins me in extending our heartfelt sympathy to your Majesty and the people of Japan. Our prayers and thoughts are with everyone who has been affected by the dreadful disaster." Prince Charles, the heir to the throne, said he had heard the news of the devastating quake and the tsunamis it generated with "the greatest shock and sadness." In his own message to the emperor, Charles said: "You are constantly in our thoughts and prayers at this most dreadful and challenging of times." Foreign Secretary William Hague said Britain stood ready to send humanitarian assistance and search and rescue teams to the quake zone. The full scale of those left homeless was believed to be much higher, with police saying they had not received a tally from Miyagi prefecture, a hard-hit northern Japan province where hundreds of deaths have been reported. Thousands more were trapped in buildings surrounded by swirling floodwaters in Miyagi, authorities said, after a towering wall of water generated by the 8.9-magnitude earthquake tore into homes, streets and towns. Fears of a radiation leak prompted thousands of residents near the two nuclear plants in Fukushima to evacuate as their operator Tokyo Electric Power attempted to ease building reactor pressure by releasing radioactive steam. | Hundreds more Indonesians to be evacuated to Tokyo Posted: 12 Mar 2011 04:51 AM PST  Jakarta - More than 400 Indonesians living in different parts of disaster-stricken Japan are going to be evacuated to Tokyo and eventually sent home, Indonesian ambassador to Japan Muhammad Lutfi said here Saturday. "The Indonesian Embassy has set up a team for rescuing our people in Japan, especially those who are staying in Iwate Prefecture, Miyagi and Fukushima. An airplane has been sent to evacuate them to Tokyo," said Lutfi to ANTARA via telephone. Lutfi said there were 496 Indonesian citizens who wee spread in the three areas located near the epicenter of the earthquake. They were 140 people in Iwate Prefecture, 274 people in Miyagi and 82 people in Fukushima City. He also said from those Indonesian citizens, there were 95 heads of family who had been identified the condition. "They are in good condition, safe and health. Now, they are staying in some refuges in there," he said. He also said that the evacuation of Indonesian citizens in Japan to Indonesia would be done after there was sureness of their condition in Tokyo. "We are now focusing on rescuing our people in the disaster areas to be brought to Tokyo, and after that we will discuss about the evacuation to Indonesia," he said. The team from Indonesian Embassy was finding difficulties in entering Sendai, the biggest city near the epicenter, to evacuate people to Tokyo. Meanwhile, Spokesman of Indonesian Foreign Ministry Michael Tene said that the team of Indonesian Embassy to Tokyo had sent assistance to Iwate Prefecture and Miyagi. "The team has been sent to help Indonesian citizens there, while we are going to communicate with the Embassy in Tokyo via telephone or internet network," Tene said. Not all of the 31,517 Indonesians known to be living in Japan have been impacted by a magnitude earthquake measuring 8.9 on Richter Scale which triggered to tsunami that hit Iwate Prefecture and Miyagi. As quoted by Kyodo, the Japan National Police Agency said 1.000 were died or unaccounted as of 10.00 am of local time.
