| Bahrain onslaught on protesters Posted: 16 Mar 2011 09:54 AM PDT  Security forces with tanks have overrun a square in the centre of Bahrain's capital Manama where anti-government protesters have been camped for weeks. At least three civilians were reportedly killed after police fired on mainly Shia protesters. Officials said three police also died. Troops have taken over a hospital treating the wounded. Officials have imposed a curfew and banned protests. The country's Sunni rulers on Tuesday called in Saudi troops to keep order. Bahrain's health minister, himself a Shia, has resigned in protest against the government's use of force, and the BBC's Caroline Hawley in Manama says Shia judges have resigned en masse. Meanwhile a surgeon told the BBC's Bill Law that he had been called to a private hospital to operate on a man with gunshot wounds but was forced to turn back. He said government claims that protesters were not being denied treatment were false. "I am terrified," he added. "This is a genocide directed against the Shia." Human rights groups said live rounds had been used in some parts of the city. There are reports of dozens injured but our correspondent says it is difficult to get any sense of casualty numbers. Seven people had been killed during a month of protests prior to Tuesday's clashes. The Shia majority complain of economic hardship, lack of political freedom and discrimination in jobs in favour of Sunnis. The king has reshuffled his cabinet but has not replaced the prime minister of more than 40 years, Sheikh Khalifah ibn Salman al-Khalifah. The protesters were inspired by the recent uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt, whose long-serving presidents were forced from power after weeks of demonstrations. Bahrain - which has a population of 800,000 and is home to the US Navy's Fifth Fleet - is the first Gulf country to be thrown into turmoil by the wave of unrest sweeping the Arab world. Protests there began last month. In other developments: * The largest Shia opposition group, Wefaq, has urged followers to avoid confrontation with authorities, and said it had not organised any protests, Reuters news agency reports * Senior Bahrain opposition MP Abdel Jalil Khalil, quoted by Reuters, described the crackdown as a "war of annihilation" * President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran, the major Shia power in the region, said the crackdown was unjustifiable and irreparable, and blamed the US * The country's stock market said it had closed until further notice. Two of Bahrain's main banks - Standard Chartered and HSBC Holdings - said they had closed all their branches It is not clear whether soldiers from other Gulf states are taking part in the crackdown, but there are indications that the Saudi troops are being kept in reserve. After security forces moved in on Wednesday, plumes of black smoke rose as tents burned in Pearl Square, the centre of the protests. A BBC correspondent in Manama said armoured vehicles were taking up position in the area. Hospital surrounded There was a call for further protests mid-afternoon. But shortly afterwards a military officer announced a 1600 (1300 GMT) - 0400 curfew live on TV, to start just a half hour later, and there were no reports of further demonstrations. The crackdown comes a day after King Hamad Bin Isa Al Khalifa declared a three-month state of emergency. At least two people died in clashes on Tuesday and more than 200 were injured. On Wednesday, protesters had set up barricades in the square but they were no match for the military, our correspondent says. An eyewitness, Dalal, told the BBC that police were firing rubber bullets at tents in the square, and set fire to cooking oil. "People began retreating," she said. "When the police saw that we were moving they ran towards us." The security forces then moved into Manama's financial district, reopening roads which had been blocked by protesters. Sources at the Salmaniya hospital said it had been surrounded by troops, and no-one was being allowed in or out. The wounded are now reportedly being treated in mosques or at home. 'Terrified' A doctor there told the BBC that she and her colleagues were hiding from troops who had taken over the building and were shooting at people inside the hospital, threatening the doctors with live ammunition. "They are all around Salmaniya medical complex with their guns and they are shooting anybody," she said.  |
| Libya revolt: Gaddafi troops assault Ajdabiya, Misrata Posted: 16 Mar 2011 09:51 AM PDT  Pro-Gaddafi forces are undertaking a twin-pronged assault on rebel positions in both east and west Libya. Government soldiers have surrounded and made their first ground assault on Ajdabiya - the last town before rebel headquarters in Benghazi. Tanks and artillery are pounding the only major rebel-held western city - Libya's third largest city, Misrata. The advance by troops loyal to Libya's leader comes ahead of the UN Security Council discussing a no-fly zone. The UK, France and Lebanon have called for this in a draft resolution. Massacre feared Rebel leaders, who rose up against Libya's long-time leader in February demanding political reforms, want the international community to prevent pro-Gaddafi forces from using aircraft against them. But countries such as the US, Russia, China and Germany are understood to harbour doubts about the wisdom of getting involved. The Arab League has backed the idea but Tuesday's meeting of G8 foreign ministers in Paris failed to do so. After regaining several towns in recent days, Col Muammar Gaddafi's allies say they are now in control of Ajdabiya. Rebel leaders said the assault had been repelled and that they also still controlled the road to Benghazi, Libya's second city. But a BBC correspondent was unable to reach Ajdabiya, because the city was surrounded by government troops. He said rebel fighters had begun preparing new defensive positions on the road to the opposition stronghold of Benghazi, 160km (100 miles) away. Rebel fighters also denied claims that they have been forced from Misrata. "The shelling on the city stopped and the rebels have captured some tanks. The battle is continuing on the eastern side, but it is not a heavy one," a resident called Mohammed told the Reuters news agency by telephone. The BBC's Jon Leyne in Benghazi says the situation in the city is getting more tense by the hour and the calls for a no-fly zone more desperate. Jalal al-Gallal of the National Libyan Transitional Council said there would be a "massacre" if the international community did not intervene. "He [Gaddafi] will kill civilians, he will kill dreams, he will destroy us," he told the BBC. A broadcast on state TV urged all armed forces in eastern Libya to join a government advance on Benghazi, Reuters reported. Earlier, Col Gaddafi's son Saif al-Islam told Euronews TV that: "Everything will be over in 48 hours" even if a no-fly zone is imposed. But our correspondent says such announcements appear to be propaganda designed to unnerve the opposition. Gaddafi taunts UK Even if Ajdabiya falls, the government does not seem to have enough troops in the field to attack Benghazi, a city of one million people, he says. However, medical aid agency Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) on Wednesday announced that it was pulling its staff out of Benghazi due to the heavy fighting. It said it would continue to send supplies to health facilities in Libya. French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe on Wednesday used his blog to condemn the slow response of the international community to the situation in Libya. "Only the threat of force can stop Gaddafi. It is by bombarding, with the few dozen planes and helicopters he really has, his opponents' positions that the Libyan dictator has turned the balance," he wrote. He also said that several - unnamed - Arab nations were prepared to take part in such action. British Prime Minister David Cameron urged the UN to "show leadership". Italy's Foreign Minister Franco Frattini, however, ruled out military intervention, according to Reuters. "We cannot have war, the international community should not, does not want and cannot do it," he told a hearing of a parliamentary commission in the Senate. Italy, which ruled Libya for three decades, has had close relations with Col Gaddafi. In a TV speech on Tuesday evening, Col Gaddafi taunted the UK and France. "Britain no longer exists. It is a trace of what it used to be. It has been promoting attack on Libya. Is there a common border between us? Are you our guardian? By what right?" he said. He went on to "dare" the US, Britain and France to "give their people freedom like I did to the Libyan people". | Twitter users get extra security with HTTPS Posted: 16 Mar 2011 09:43 AM PDT  Twitter users are being given the option of logging on to the site through a secure connection. The "always use HTTPS" setting has been introduced to help stop hackers who target people as they connect over public wi-fi. The same type of technology is used to protect online bank accounts and electronic purchases. Switching to HTTPS on Twitter is not compulsory, but most security experts say it is a good idea. The microblogging site has been trialing the use of HTTPS for some time, however users had to access it by a slightly different address. They can now use it automatically by changing an option in Twitter's security settings. HTTPS, or Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure, creates a secure channel within an internet connection by checking a website's authenticity with certain approved certificate authorities. Hacked accounts Unsecured wireless connections are susceptible to certain types of hacking, such as "man-in-the-middle" attacks, where criminals intercept the data stream and monitor whatever passes through. Although relatively little personal information is exchanged over Twitter, compared to services such as internet banking, hacked accounts can be problematic, according to Graham Cluley from security firm Sophos. "It is not so much about snooping on what someone says," said Mr Cluley. "What has happened in the past is that high profile people have had their account snatched. "When that person is someone like Ashton Kutcher who has six million followers, then someone can send a message from them that might be spam or phishing or malware," he said. While HTTPS offers greater protection, using the system can slow down access to a service because of the multiple round-trips required to authenticate data. Facebook announced in January that it was to begin offering HTTPS security. | Apple delays Japanese launch of iPad 2 Posted: 16 Mar 2011 09:40 AM PDT  Apple has postponed the launch of the iPad 2 tablet in Japan, as the country struggles to recover from the recent earthquake and tsunami. Originally planned for 25 March, the company said its launch had been delayed indefinitely. Many technology firms are facing supply problems after factories in Japan shut down in the wake of the disaster. However, an Apple spokesperson said the announced delay was unrelated to any supply shortages. "We are delaying the launch of the iPad 2 in Japan while the country and our teams focus on recovering from the recent disaster," said Natalie Kerris. Apple has been using its iTunes store to accept donations for the American Red Cross' (ARC) Japan earthquake and tsunami relief fund. According to the company, 100% of the proceeds will go directly to the Red Cross. While the country's main focus is on the human cost of the disaster, many businesses are also facing challenges. Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba and Canon had all been forced to halt production in the immediate aftermath, in order to carry out safety checks. The prospect of rolling power blackouts means further interruptions are likely over the coming weeks. US launch The updated version of the Apple's iPad first appeared in stores across the US last Friday. Many retailers reported running out of stock within hours, and analysts estimated sales to hit 1m units during the weekend. Buyers in 24 other countries, including the UK, will be able to get their hands on the iPad 2 next week. Apple CEO Steve Jobs has unveiled the tablet computer at an event in San Francisco on 1 March. The iPad 2 is said to be twice the speed of its predecessor; it has cameras on the front and back and also features improved graphics. | Hernandez is Man Utd's rising star Posted: 16 Mar 2011 09:35 AM PDT Dimitar Berbatov athletically vaulted over a barrier to avoid discussing his latest exclusion by Manchester United - but he is not finding it as easy to escape the looming shadow of Javier Hernandez. Berbatov's status as top scorer with 20 goals this season has not protected him from falling victim to the rapid rise of the 22-year-old, who proved his pedigree once more with the two goals that beat Marseille and sent United into the Champions League quarter-finals. The Bulgarian's quality ensures he will figure prominently as United chase a treble in the closing weeks of the campaign and Sir Alex Ferguson manouevres his attacking resources. But the performance of the predatory Hernandez in tandem with an improving Wayne Rooney, both in the FA Cup win against Arsenal and in securing a place in the last eight of the Champions League for the fifth season in succession, perhaps provided a signpost to the future for Ferguson. Ferguson attempted to keep the lid on his delight about how quickly Hernandez has adapted to the demands in both domestic and European combat - a task in which he did not quite succeed. Hernandez's instincts eased United through a meeting with Marseille that was anything but routine. Indeed if Didier Deschamps' side had a cutting edge of the sort the Mexican provided, Ferguson could easily have been contemplating the conclusion of this season's European campaign. Marseille grasped at the hope that they could spring a surprise when Wes Brown headed into his own net seven minutes from time, but United survived thanks to Hernandez. Ferguson, who wisely sealed a £6m deal with Mexican side Chivas de Guadalajara before Hernandez came to greater prominence in the World Cup in South Africa, said: "I think we are surprised at how fast he has developed. When we bought him we thought he would take some time to adapt. "First of all his main role was as a substitute and the times he came on he won a few games for us, but now he's used to the physical part and he is lasting the 90 minutes very well. The greatest option of all is afforded by the growing evidence that Ferguson has unearthed a natural goalscorer with an ability to plunder goals in the mould of "the baby-faced assassin" Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Hernandez carries more threat of raw pace than the Norwegian did, but the key is in the movement, some of it is magical. As Ferguson pointed out, Hernandez made three runs, checking and moving expertly, to ensure he was in the right place to turn in Rooney's shot for United's first goal. It looked a simple finish but all the hard work was done before Hernandez completed the formalities, a quality appreciated and noted by Ferguson's eagle eye. The training grounds of Carrington will hone that talent further but so much of it appears to come as second nature to Hernandez, who has now scored 16 goals for United despite only starting 17 games. Such is Ferguson's faith in the striker known as "Little Pea" that he has felt comfortable restricting Berbatov to bench duty, even when confronted by opposition of the significance of Arsenal and Marseille. And as with Solskjaer, no-one should be fooled by the schoolboy appearance and angelic expression. The arch-competitor Gabriel Heinze felt threatened enough to deploy his expertise in the dark arts, only to discover painfully that Hernandez was equally willing to give as to receive.
