| Twelve killed in floods landslides in Aceh Posted: 12 Mar 2011 05:56 PM PST  Jakarta - Twelve people have been killed in floods and landslides that occurred in Pidie, Aceh, in the past few days. "Twelve people have been killed and four others were reported missing," head of data and information and public relations of the National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB), Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, said to ANTARA when contacted from Jakarta to confirm the incident. The floods and landslides happened following incessant rains since Thursday (March 10) that forced more than 7,000 people in the district to seek refuge in safer places. District head Mirza Ismail said on Saturday he was still recording the evacuees. He said 47 houses have been destroyed and hundred others have been damaged. Some bridges, two schools and two mosques have also been damaged. "Six kilometers of road have also been damaged and 50 hectares of rice fields inundated," he said. | Speaker slams Australian media over report on Indonesian figures Posted: 12 Mar 2011 05:50 PM PST Jakarta - Indonesian House Speaker Marzuki Alie has slammed Australian media for having published stories irresponsibly on the country`s national figures. He said to newsmen here on Saturday the Australian media (The Age and Sydney Morning Herald) had been irresponsible because they just took data for them from a Wikileaks website and failed to check the truth first to the sources concerned. "It is regrettable that the media of a country boasting itself to be a democracy have failed to conduct a check and a recheck to people reported in their stories and so their credibility is worth questioning," he said. "It is clear the Age has never checked with the persons reported," he said. Marzuki also considered the stories tendentious and therefore the Indonesian people must question their motives. "Obviously they have a an intention of shaking the political stability under the government of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono," he said. He appreciated foreign minister Marty Natalegawa that has summoned the US ambassador to Indonesia to ask for his explanation. He said the move was correct. He said "if the stories came from them the US must apologize. But what is important is that people must not be provoked by such reports," he said. Marzuki called on the government to take correct measures with regard to the Australian media and if necessary they must take legal action against them. He said the impact of the stories was not only domestic but also abroad as the country`s role in world affairs could be affected. | RI offers disaster relief assistance to Japan Posted: 12 Mar 2011 05:46 PM PST Jakarta - The Indonesian government has offered disaster relief assistance to Japan following the magnitude-8.9 magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami that hit the country last Friday "As a friend of Japan, President Yudhoyono has instructed me to inform the Japanese government of our readiness to provide disaster relief assistance," Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa said here Saturday. Marty also expressed condolences to the government and people of Japan on the disaster that happened on Friday (March 11) at 02.46 pm local time. "In connection with the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, President Yudhoyono, the government and people of Indonesia again express our deepest condolences to Japan," Marty added. The Indonesia government was also to send a team consisting of five officers from the Foreign Ministry on Saturday night to help the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo in caring for Indonesian citizens living in Japan, Marty said. The team from the Foreign Ministry was tasked to help the embassy team in mitigating and protecting Indonesian citizens in Japan, especially those who lived in Miyagi and Iwate prefectures. "Tonight, the Foreign Ministry will send a team to help the Indonesian Embassy there in protecting our citizens," he said. Earlier, the Indonesian Embassy in Japan had sent a team to Sendai City to help Indonesian citizens who stayed near the epicenter of the earthquake that hit Japan on Friday (March 11).
